Recent writings
Some recent writing of mine in non-obvious places...My essay on why some people (apparently) want to live forever appears in Demos' rather good collection on human enhancement, Better Humans, and may be downloaded from them here
I
wrote regular feature articles on molecular biology for Wellcome
Science, now suspended but archived on the web here. There is something of mine in most issues.
A recent article describing the results
of the ESRC's Innovative Health Technologies Programme is here (scroll down to bottom of the page for the PDF)
I wrote a lengthy introduction
to the ESRC's work on genomics, for the Genomics Policy and Research
Forum. See
Genomics and Social Science: an
Agenda for Research.
The European Commission held an interesting meeting on open access publishing in science last year - under the less than enticing rubric Scientific Publishing in the European Research Area. My semi-official account of the meeting (rather inaccurately entitled "proceedings" - it isn't) can be found as a PDF here
I had fun in 2007 writing the first research review for UCLH NHS trust - fun because the UCL connection means the Trust is involved in high-level stuff across most medical specialities. Results of my efforts, which they titled "shaping the future" are in PDF here.
I also review fairly regularly for The Independent and for my one time employer The THES, or THE as it now wants to be known. The new title has been marked by making their website free and searchable, and it tells me I have written 60 odd reviews for them since 1994.There are also older pieces of mine in the Guardian and New Scientist book review archives.
